I shot these photos in Tiananmen Square. As I stood there snapping photos and taking in the sights, I couldn’t help but think of ‘Tank Man’, the iconic photo taken by Jeff Widener in June 1989 during the Tiananmen Square Protests. While that photo was seen around the world and has come to represent the […]
This is Baoguo Temple, a Buddhist temple whose origins date back to the 16th century. It is located on Mount Emei, near Emeishan City. Sarah and I spent a few nights here when we toured China. It was one of the highlights of the trip. Staying at a Buddhist temple was a unique experience. As […]
This is the Tower of Buddhist Incense with the Hall of Dispelling Clouds in front. The Tower sits atop Longevity Hill, a 200-foot high hill that was built from the dirt excavated to make Kunming Lake. I took these photos at the Summer Palace in Beijing, which is made up of 300 hectares of palaces […]
Walking around the night market in Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter was a truly amazing experience. I could have wandered the streets for hours if I had had more film with me. These shots all captured the store vendors on their phones. Clearly, they were not as enthralled by the sights as I was.
Surrounded by karst mountains, Yanghsuo is a very picturesque little town in south-eastern China. Can you spot the western brands on the buildings around town? Nike, Adidas, KFC, and Pizza Hut are all there.
Sarah & I spent a lovely day in People’s Park in Chengdu. We rowed a boat on the lake, had tea in the overcrowded seating area, watched an elderly man write poetry on the pavement in front of the Railway Protection Movement Monument, and visited the Wenshu Monastery.
I shot these photos early one morning as Sarah and I wandered around Yangshuo looking to buy our morning coffee. Yangshuo is a beautiful little town in China that looks like it was decorated for children. It is very odd, almost surreal, and yet very charming in its own way. I was just excited to […]
Here are some more photos of my walk through an old hutong in Beijing. #2067 below is my failed attempt at a mirror selfie. The man in the photo got in the way, and if I waited around for him to leave, I was worried that he might think I was trying to photograph him […]
A hutong is a narrow street or lane between rows of traditional courtyard residences and is commonly found in Beijing. Sarah and I walked through an old hutong near the Bell Tower (pictured above) and these are some of the photos I took. I used Lomography Potsdam Kino 100 for these photos and I have […]
I’ve posted a lot about the amazing night markets in Xi’an and Yangshuo, so this time I’m just going to say that the Olympus Trip 35 is a great camera to use for brightly lit night photography. I shot these photos on Kodak Portra 400. This is arguably my favourite colour film.
These are from a bicycle tour that Sarah & I took around the Yangshuo countryside in China. They were taken with my Olympus Trip 35, and while the Trip 35 is small enough to fit in a coat pocket, it does not fit in the pockets of my shorts. I had to carry it in […]
