This photo of a man pruning a topiary is from my first day in China last summer. The area around our hotel in Beijing was pretty nice and I often walked by this topiary on my way to and from the hotel.
Sarah and I spent a day at Ocean Park in Hong Kong. While wandering through the park, we came across a stage performance with dancers dressed in sailor outfits. It looked interesting so I stuck around to watch and take photos. But when they brought out the water guns, I felt like a little kid […]
When Sarah and I toured wineries in Marlborough, New Zealand, we stayed in Blenheim, a small town on the South Island. It was very peaceful and we wandered around town taking pictures. If you’re ever there, I highly recommend the Watery Mouth Café (third photo). It was so good, we had breakfast there every day.
It’s safe to say that Vietnam has millions of motorbikes and scooters. There are so many that it is having a detrimental effect on Vietnam’s air quality. The air pollution was pretty bad when I visited a few years ago. And with that many motorbikes on the road, crossing the street is an adventure! (If […]
I’ve become a little obsessed with Instax Mini film lately. As I mentioned in a previous post, I am currently working on a project using Instax Mini and so it’s been on my mind a lot. So much, in fact, that I awoke one morning with the idea that I wanted to shoot Instax Mini […]
These are from a trip to Lundbreck Falls in southern Alberta. They are from the day I drove down the Cowboy Trail with my photography club. It was a fun day and I would recommend joining (or forming) a photography club if you can. Photography can be a lonely hobby sometimes, so it’s a lot […]
The 4th Street Lilac Festival always draws a huge crowd here in Calgary. Vendors and food trucks line the streets, there’s live music, and even a parade. It would be a lot of fun, except for the crowds. So many people (and their pets) attend the summmer festival, that sometimes it reaches the tipping point […]
These are from a day I spent at Spruce Meadows photographing show jumping. I was quite thrilled by the way these photos turned out, especially #1167 above. It took me a few rolls before I figured out exactly how to get the best out of my Canon EOS 3 that day. I wanted to capture […]
Sarah & I had lunch at Wither Hills Winery one summer in Marlborough, New Zealand. We had lunch in the courtyard where I had an amazing pinot noir. Afterwards, we went inside for a wine tasting and ended up buying a bottle of noble riesling.
The Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, AB is home to a Lancaster bomber (FM-159). On certain days during the year, they take the Lancaster out of the hangar and run the 4 Packard Merlin engines. I was there one summer and snapped these photos on Imation Scotch Color HP100 film. (I also have […]
This is a photo from Central Memorial Park here in Calgary. I shot this shortly before it was announced that manufacturing of the Holga camera had ceased production. Of course, that decision didn’t last long and the Holga is still being made to this day. I like my Holga and should probably shoot with it […]
The front end of this hot rod was shot a few years back at the Show ‘n Shine in High River. I was in town photographing hot air balloons when I stumbled onto the Show ‘n Shine. I’m glad I did. It was a perfect way to end an already amazing day of photography: hot […]
These are photos of a few of the statues on the grounds surrounding Government Gardens in Rotorua, New Zealand. I quite like the way the first photo turned out. I love the look of Kodak Tri-X 400. It is an absolutely beautiful B&W film.
These are from a day trip I took with some photographers a few years ago. We drove along the Cowboy Trail through southern Alberta with many stops along the way. I shot mostly 35mm that day, but I also had my Belair X 6-12 Jetsetter & Instant Back with me. The first photo is from […]
These lemurs were shot using Kodak Farbwelt 400. I’ve shot Kodak Farbwelt before and those photos turned out better. I’ve also photographed these lemurs on Fuji Superia 100. Those photos also turned out well. This is normal with expired film. As I’ve discussed before, the quality of expired film depends largely on how well it […]
I shoot a lot of expired film. Occasionally, I come across old film that has somehow managed to defy aging. This is usually because it was properly stored over its lifetime. Ferrania Solaris FG 100 and Perutz Primera 100 are two films I own that still look good a decade after the expiry date. And […]
I shot these in Fish Creek Park using discontinued and expired Solaris FG 100 film by Ferrania. I adjusted the ISO to 50 to compensate for the age of the film and I was really excited how the photos turned out. I wish I had more of this film.
I came across this man holding a guitar while walking down the street in Emeishan City. He seemed completely out of place and I was hoping he would play something, but sadly, this ‘Guitar Hero’ never played for us.
Sarah and I visited Emeishan City at the base of Mount Emei (aka Emeishan) in August. Mount Emei is one of the Four Sacred Mountains of Buddhism in China. We actually spent a few nights at Baoguo Temple (aka Baoguosi) and spent a day hiking up Mount Emei-–which was like climbing the world’s longest flight […]
I own a Diana F+ camera with ‘all the fixins’. I bought the deluxe kit one year and also picked up the Instant Back. The result is that it’s a lot of fun to use all the Diana’s lenses while shooting Instax Mini. I shot this at a friend’s place on Fuji Instax Mini (Star […]
